The Quickest Way to Show Hidden Files

Every operation system typically has some form of file-hiding functionality built in, and macOS is no exception. Many files or folders are hidden with the main goal of preventing curious users from deleting an important folder or changing a critical file that could cause major problems. If you wish to show hidden files you have two methods to do it.

Keyboard Shortcut

Since the release of macOS Sierra, Apple has included an easy way to see the hidden files. So if you use modern version of macOS this way is preferable for you. Keyboard shortcut in Finder can be used to toggle hidden files visibility.

  1. Open Finder
  2. Navigate to the folder you wish to use
  3. Press key combination Command-Shift-Period (.)

This is result for my home folder:

Terminal

This method is working for all versions of macOS.

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Enter the folowing string:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles true; killall Finder
  3. Press Enter

This string contains two commands. The first command alters settings of Finder to show all files. The second command restarts the Finder, refreshing all its windows to show hidden files.

If you wish to change hidden files visibility back, follow this steps:

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Enter the folowing string:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles false; killall Finder
  3. Press Enter

You can now see and access the contents of any folder which were previously hidden from sight.
